Bangladesh Revives Case To Drop Islam As State Religion

bangladesh

LEGAL action to drop Islam as Bangladesh’s state religion has been revived after 28 years, and the High Court has agreed to hear the case later this month.

Bangladesh’s 1971 constitution originally declared all religions were equal in the eyes of the state. However, military ruler Hussain Mohammad Ershad amended it in 1988 to make Islam the state religion.

The hearing comes after a slew of attacks against the country’s minority populations, including Hindus, Christians and Shi’ite Muslims.

Some of the attacks, including the killing of a Hindu priest, have been claimed by ISIS. The militant group has also said it was behind the killings of a Japanese citizen, an Italian aid worker and a policeman.

The Government denies that ISIS has a presence in the Muslim-majority country of 160 million people.

    • I’m thinking you are referring to “The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation founded in 1969 has 57 members, 56 of which are also member states of the United Nations. Some, especially in West Africa, are – though with large Muslim populations – not necessarily Muslim majority countries. A few countries with significant Muslim populations, such as Russia and Thailand, sit as Observer States, while others, such as India and Ethiopia, are not members.”

There is much variation among these, and I’m interested to understand why you are amazed.

      • Most of the Islamic countries would never think to move away from Islam or at the very least remove it as the state religion.
The ones that are 100% Muslim or in the 90% range would not change. The ones that are around the 50% are different in its set up. It is indeed a surprise that Bangladesh would want to move away from Islam.

The list below are some of the countries and many there is much strife and political unrest. Indonesia and Mtaylasia are two that are quite safe places but slowly are becoming more “islamised”.

Islam is the official religion of Malaysia. Government statistics in 2000 noted that about 60.4 percent of the population was Muslim and yet Islam is the official religion still.

The odd one out is Indonesia, it is a secular democratic country that has a Muslim-majority population. The state belief in “the one and only God” is contradictory. There are hardcore Muslim groups who have influenced political and judicial decision making through violence or the treats.

So it is unusual to see the proposed changes in Bangladesh.
