Twitter ‘source of all evil’ says Saudi Arabia cleric

Saudi Arabia’s top Muslim cleric has said Twitter is “the source of all evil and devastation.” Which is a very tweetable sound bite.

“If it were used correctly, it could be of real benefit, but unfortunately it’s exploited for trivial matters,” Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh said.

Twitter is “the source of all evil and devastation”, the mufti said.

“People are rushing to it thinking it’s a source of credible information but it’s a source of lies and falsehood.”

As the highest religious authority in the country Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh holds a senior government position, advising on the law and social affairs.

He was also voted the 12th most influential Muslim in the world in a recent poll.

He said users were using Twitter to “promote lies, backbite and gossip and to slander Islam”.

  1. I have steered clear of Twitter because I have a similar feeling, but I suppose that could just be my age showing! I feel forums, facebook, Wikipedia, and google search, give ample scope for both good and poor communication. I have benefited from the internet, but enough is enough, and Twitter just seems to me to be too much.

  2. To see how bad the situation is, go to the Australian Christian Lobby website and have a look at an incident that has just occurred in the last couple of days.

    To summarise:
    – The ACL reserve conference facilities at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra.
    – The purpose of the conference is to discuss religious liberty, persecution of Christians in Islamic lands, etc.
    – The LGBT launches a hate campaign against the Hyatt Hotel because they allow the ACL to use their facilities to hold the conference.
    – Hyatt Hotel star rating drops from 5 stars to 3 stars.
    – Hyatt Hotel is considering refusing the facilities to the ACL because of pressure from the GLBT lobby.
    – Only a concerted effort from other Christians upgrades the rating of the Hyatt Hotel by pressing like on facebook. Despite the fact that the Hyatt Hotel holds similar sentiments to the GLBT lobby.

    I tend to agree with the cleric.
