LAWRENCE Anthony was a legend in South Africa and author of three books including the bestseller, The Elephant Whisperer.
He rescued and rehabilitated elephants all over the globe from human atrocities, including the courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals during US invasion in 2003.

On March 7, 2012 Lawrence Anthony died. He is remembered and missed by his wife, 2 sons, 2 grandsons, and numerous elephants. Two days after his passing, the wild elephants showed up at his home led by two large matriarchs. Separate wild herds arrived in droves to say goodbye to their beloved ‘man-friend’. A total of 31 elephants had patiently walked over 12 miles to get to his South African House.

Witnessing this spectacle, humans were obviously in awe not only because of the supreme intelligence and precise timing that these elephants sensed about Lawrence’s passing, but also because of the profound memory and emotion the beloved animals evoked in such an organized way: Walking slowly, for days, making their way in a solemn one-by-one queue from their habitat to his house.

Lawrence ‘s wife, Francoise, was especially touched, knowing that the elephants had not been to his house prior to that day for well over three years! But yet they knew where they were going. The elephants obviously wanted to pay their deep respects, honoring their friend who’d saved their lives – so much respect that they stayed for two days and two nights without eating anything. Then one morning, they left, making their long journey back home.

      • It’s the animal kingdom’s equivalent of love. And love unites. There’s no way science will ever work that one out…..not without God in the picture that is. 😉

      • A faith in science I would find rather impossible! Science is only knowledge of the laws God has put in place, the methods He used (uses?) in creation.

        Next time have a little look down where your hands are. Notice that little thingo with all the letters and numbers on it – that’s called a keyboard and it’s connected to a computer.

        How do you think that happened. Here’s a hint that “science” might have had something to do with it.

        Nobody has faith in science because faith isn’t needed. We take science for granted in a myriad of ways in our daily lives. When you get results you don’t need faith.

    • So really Dom,
      You would still believe that earthquakes volcanos and tsunamis are all arbitrary acts of some divine power? Because that is just what people used to say centuries ago, when they lacked important scientific knowledge, and everything out of the ordinary was attributed to a god or a supernatural source.

      I certainly dont have ‘faith’ in science; and I dont really think that Strewth does either. Over our combined long lives, we’ve seen a number of old superstitions and supernatural attributions explained away.

      Actually I have no doubt that there are some extraordinary abilities many animals have that are yet to be explained or unravelled. But for the greater part, I think that they will be.

      • All that happens on this planet and to some degree in the Universe is the result of our thinking and emotions. If you truly bury yourself into science without prejudice, you find modern science is starting to recognize that. Thought and emotion carry huge energy which is creative in much greater way that we used to accept. Imagine the power of combined thoughts of a nation, or the power of TV audience, which can include half of the world population. I just mention Diana’s death in Paris. Didn’t you feel the sadness emanating from the TV? Most of the world that day mourned for her. It was a tangible feeling.
        Knowing that, that our thoughts and feelings create disasters gives us also the power to do something about it, we can change the way we think and feel anytime and change the world. But I believe we need to change ourselves first. If we decide to live in harmony with each other and ourselves, we can do anything. So the way to change the world start with each of us individually. Without science or religions. Look deep into your heart to find tolerance, compassion, kindness and love. It is all there. Don’t preach the gospel with many words, preach it by how you are, what you do. Nothing else counts in the physical incarnation. When we face ourselves after we leave this body, we account for everything we have done in life The one we call Jesus is certainly present, not to judge us but show us our life as it really was. I faced god 3 times in what we call near death experience. There was nothing near about it, it were an amazing events which impressed itself deeply not only on mu mind, but the whole being. I was fortunate to have these experiences, but that I really wanted to know if god is real.
        I see so many things wee don’t understand yet, starting with the way we treat the planet. For some reason humanity treats planet as a dead matter, unaware and unconscious. I tell you this, the planet is a living being, complex and conscious. It lives to give life to our ‘human’ bodies. To nourish and sustain it. Yet we make it almost impossible for the planet to do so, poisoning it, destroying is and totally abusing it for our ‘needs’ financially.We in pursuit of profit and the myself above all.
        I understand if you don’t like me here for speaking out what we all know on the inside, but this was my burden and work of love for most of my life. I risked jail and faced death in the communists system, because I spoke out, and nothing really changed coming to the west. The methods were bit more subtle. People don’t (still) like the truth, nothing much has changed since the coming of Christ. We have more technology, but that is more of our downfall than progress. I sincerely hope we change before is too late.
        I have not changed sufficiently to stay here in this world and carry my work further and I am paying the ultimate price, gong back to the creator before my time. I still hope for miracle to happen, but realistically as we call it, my days are counted. But I like to leave my words with you to ponder and meditate on, considering a possibility that there is something that I said worth accept. Something worth changing your old habits. To look into your heart, instead of mind when making decisions.

        I think I have fallen under your radar. 🙂

        I believe the laws that govern Earthquakes, volcanos etc were created by God. God orchestrates through the laws.

        I think Strewth and yourself does have faith in science. You believe science will have the answers one day. Who knows maybe you are right. It is a law from God that is undiscovered that can be explained by science. Maybe you are wrong. Do you entertain that possibility ?

      • Dom, I think you are saying the same as I am, that the laws discovered by science come from God. The problem is of faith in them?

        Science is an ongoing discovery. We find one law, then a higher law that counteracts it. Only an ignorant person would have a belief, a faith, that scientific factcan’t be challenged.

        Then faith that all will be revealed one day? Only in God’s good time. So far He has brought us to the point of understanding much our early ancestors thought miraculous, but there is so very much more.

        of course I entertain the possibility that absolutely anything might be disproven in the long run. I DONT believe in any infallibility in science. But in the meantime, I find a consistent reliability in the processes that I term the laws of nature, and sufficient to take it for granted that for the time being I can rely on them. If they dont work on some occasion, then so what? In the meantime I am grateful for the things that do appear to work.

        But no I dont have anything like ‘faith’ in science or anything earthly. Science for the time being has given me a rationale for a pretty consistent lot of conditions. Heaven knows just when some other ‘law’ of science (or of the God) which I dont conceive of, might pop up out of the blue and turn everything upside down for me.

    • I see it as superiour ability of animals to be aware. Not only are these elephants aware of the fact, that this man spent lifetime to protect them, but they also became aware of his passing. Animal never forget a good deed we make. If you safe animal life, that animal will never forget this. So many examples around the world. Just Google it. Lions remembering people after decades, rubbing their faces to human face, salt water crock frolicking with human friend in water, tiger affections to his rescuer. I am talking about totally wild animals coming into contact with humans who helped them to stay alive in whatever way. We human beings have the same ability to be aware on what we call subconscious level (make you wonder about the word subconscious), but allowed the intellect to override this function by reason. We reason we are separate from the rest of creation. We somewhat superiour.
      I say we all one, everything on this planet and the entire Universe is one. We all come from that same and return to the same. We presently call it god, but the time will come we will understand more and act differently.
      May you all embrace awareness, it comes through the heart, not the mind. Don’t worship the intellectual mind as your god. Mind is a tool, extremely useful at that, but a bad ruler.

    Elephants can tell difference between human languages

    Washington — African elephants can differentiate between human languages and move away from those considered a threat, a skill they have honed to survive in the wild, researchers said.
    The study suggests elephants, already known to be intelligent creatures, are even more sophisticated than previously believed when it comes to understanding human dangers.
    African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are the largest land animals on Earth and are considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and illegal hunting for their ivory tusks.
    Researchers played recordings of human voices for elephants at Amboseli National Park in Kenya to see how they would respond, according to a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
    Some of the voices were from local Maasai men, a group that herds cattle and sometimes comes into conflict with elephants over access to water and grazing space. Occasionally, elephants are killed in clashes with Maasai men, and vice-versa.
    Other recorded voices were from Kamba men, who tend to be farmers or employees of the national park, and who rarely represent a danger to elephants.
    Still other voices tested on the elephants included female Maasai speakers and young boys.
    All were saying the same phrase: “Look, look over there, a group of elephants is coming.”
    The recorded voices were played for hundreds of elephants across 47 family groups during daylight hours.
    When elephants heard the adult male Maasai voices, they tended to gather together, start investigative smelling with their trunks, and move cautiously away.
    But when elephants heard females, boys, or adult male Kamba speakers, they did not show concern.
    – Discriminating between languages –
    “The ability to distinguish between Maasai and Kamba men delivering the same phrase in their own language suggests that elephants can discriminate between different languages,” said co-author Graeme Shannon, a visiting fellow in psychology at the University of Sussex.
    That is not the same as understanding what the words mean, but still shows that elephants can decipher the more sing-songy Maasai language from the Kamba tongue, perhaps based on inflections, use of vowels, and other cues.
    “It is very sophisticated what the elephants are doing,” said Keith Lindsay, a conservation biologist and member of the scientific advisory committee of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project.
    “A lot of animals will take flight at just the general threat posed by people, but a smart animal doesn’t do that,” he told AFP.
    “Their response to hearing Maasai men talking was to be alert, to move away, but not to run away in total fear,” added Lindsay, who was not involved in the study.
    “It is suggesting that elephants are capable of thinking, (of) recognizing that if Maasai men are talking, they are not likely to be hunting because if they were hunting, they would be quiet.”
    – Wiser with age –
    Elephant groups with older matriarchs in their midst did best at assessing the threat from different speakers, further bolstering the presumed role of learning in the animals’ behavior.
    The elephants also did not act the same way as they did when recordings of lions were played, as was shown in a previous study.
    In those scenarios, they bunched together so that juveniles — those most at risk from a lion attack — were in the center, and moved toward the sounds as if to scare the lion away.
    When it comes to recognizing people, elephants may not be alone in this ability. Other research has suggested that wild bottlenose dolphins in Brazil have become so familiar with humans that they engage in cooperative hunting with artisanal fisherman.
    Great apes, crows and even prairie dogs have also been shown to differentiate between humans on some level.
    A separate study published last month in the journal PLoS ONE showed elephants even have specific alarm calls for when humans are near, suggesting the relationship between people and elephants has reached a troubling point and that conservation efforts are more important than ever.
    “We have become a formal enemy of the elephants,” said Lori Marino, an expert on animal intelligence at Emory University.
    “They can not only make some distinctions between us, but we are now on their list of species to watch out for.”

    On the evidence available just about everything in the universe is greater and deeper than human intelligence.
    It’s that often-unrecognized and even less-often admitted reality which lies at the root of our infantile invention of ‘powers’ and institutions inferior to ourselves, which we can control and manipulate according to the flavour of the month.

    Gods, for example; and ‘Motherhood’, and ‘Morality’. And ‘Love’, which someone mentioned above.

    That’s evidenced by that other reality that the more inferior we feel the mightier the “Greater and Deeper” are the security-blankets we invent.

    Can anyone imagine an elephant on it’s knees in a pew? Or in a confessional?

      • I think people believe if it has happened to them. It has happened to me and I’m pretty sure Monica said it has happened with her (or it could be something else). I’d guess Strewth, you’re open to this because you’ve had experience of it.

        To me, it just boils down to the fact that we are spiritual beings and we are connected to eachother.

      As far as any connections you experience, if you focus on the principles of Jesus, he will not let you down.

    • I know Mon that you use scripture to test these ‘spirit’ voices, and that is surely good. But added to that, I hope you are part of a community of believers, I really do. That principle of ‘two or three gathered together in His name’ is truly an indispensable safeguard for such times..

        But I can assure you and everyone else reading this that I do not communicate with the demonic, and/or angels, and never have I sought to. I take to heart God’s prohibition in this regard:

        ‘Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.’

        “Men and women among you who act as mediums or psychics must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense.”

        Psychic experiences of talking with the dead are real all right, but I do not believe they are true experiences of talking with dead people . The Bible considers these experiences to be associated with deceiving spirits, demonic forces, and angels of light which are all counterfeits for the true Spirit of God/Truth.

        The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

        No, not at all. What I am saying is that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want any of you to be partners with demons. You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.

        I do however have intimate communion with God. He shares His thoughts, feelings, impressions/visions and words, speaking to me in my own voice/mind.

      • I realised Mon that you communicate only with God, not spirits, and I think you are much wiser than many who talk to God all the time and never take time to listen to what He might be saying to them, when and if He does. A silent response from Him can result in a great sense of being held.

        But it can happen that we can be deceived by a false voice of God, too. That’s the reason for testing guidance in a group presence.

    • We acknowledge that our use of resources is threatening the survival of other species and damaging the health of ecological communities and the planet as a whole.
    • We acknowledge human-induced climate change as a result of our population and our personal and corporate consumption.
    • We acknowledge that time is limited, and we are called to inform ourselves, boldly discerning the way forward to act individually and collectively to heal and care for the earth.
    • We seek to engage with the wisdom of Indigeous peoples and affirm our responsibility to ensure that generations to come inherit a healthy planet.
