Pope faces Mafia threat

POPE Francis could be at risk from the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime organization, according to a leading anti-mob prosecutor who has himself been the target of threats from the mafia.

Nicola Gratteri, 55, a state prosecutor in the southern Italian region of Calabria, where the ‘Ndrangheta is most active, said the pope’s effort to reform the church is making the ‘Ndrangheta “very nervous.”

The organization is considered by experts in Italy to be the most dangerous, most unified and most difficult to penetrate mafia-type organization in the country.

“If the godfathers can find a way to stop him, they will seriously consider it.

“Those who have up until now profited from the influence and wealth drawn from the church are getting very nervous,” he added.

  1. Godfather III.!!
Of course a State Prosecutor would be a target for the ‘real’ gangs, and running scared. (Unlike the pussy ‘Outlaw Bikies’ out here!)
But to raise the suggestion that the Pope ~ or the church in general ~ is at risk is a nonsense. Even if there were some grounds for a conflict of interests (which I just don’t see as possible), you can’t control or intimidate someone who isn’t afraid of dying. Ask any jihadist or other religious fanatic.

This is just some pettifogging public official seeking a status way above his station.
….and using the ever-credulous press for his own ends.
This yarn could make a small story in the ‘Little World of Don Camillo’!
    (read it yet Mon?….or Kate?? http://www.gobookee.org/don-camillo/ )

  2. Actually –> “The organization is considered by experts in Italy to be the most dangerous, most unified and most difficult to penetrate mafia-type organization in the country.”
    ….isn’t that generally the government’s role? 😉

  3. So what does the pope have to fear? Remember that in his title as the Vicar of Christ, the pope assumes to be the next most powerful being on earth (Christ is first). That is why the papal crown has three crowns one on top of the other to represent dominion over heaven, earth and the region under earth (which earlier Catholics interpreted as hell). So what exactly is the pope and the catholic church fearing from the Mafia? Maybe the fact that the Mafia undermines the claims of the pope.

    • Do you hate the Jews as well davinci? Historians have studied the motivations for anti-Catholicism. The basic motivations were political (the threat posed by Rome and its allies to Protestant nations) and theological. However, scholars have also speculated on the psychological motivations, usually concluding that a strong element of irrational bigotry was involved. Conservative writer Peter Viereck once commented that Catholic baiting was akin to anti-Semitism.

      • No I don’t hate the Jews, nor Catholics. But on the other hand, Christians have been persecuted for centuries; the apostle paul himself saying that all godly shall suffer persecution. So if the pope is truly Christian, he’s got nothing to fear from the Mafia. If the pope is truly powerful as the Vicar of christ title suggests, then he’s got nothing to fear either. If however the pope is neither christian, nor as powerful as papacy claims, this will only lead to internecine wars between the pope and mafia.

      • Ah, you finally answered a question put to you. I am pleased Vlad. I’m pretty certain by his actions that the pope doesn’t fear the mafia. I think he’s as much a Christian as you claim to be.

By the way, will you now answer another question? What church/sect are you aligned to if any?

      • Doesn’t Scripture say,

“for whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved”? And… “By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.”

Pope Francis’ view of the Person of Jesus Christ is biblical. To say that he or Catholics are not Christian says more about you davinci, and it does not bode well for you.
